You never miss the water till the well runs dry
My childhood is associated with all sorts of 70s music thanks to my Mother. I've definitely talked about that here before so I won't bore you again... long story short I was bought up with Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon and Carole King (among others) on the car stereo. I was recently thinking about certain lyrics that resonated with me as a child - and the reason for this being that they evoked vivid imagery in my tiny mind. In particular there was:
"They took all the trees, put 'em in a tree museum and they charged the people a dollar and a half just to see 'em" Big Yellow Taxi - Joni Mitchell
"I went to the doctor, I went to the mountains, I looked to the children, I drank from the fountains" Closer to Fine - Indigo Girls
"I had a dream there were clouds in my coffee, clouds in my coffee and..." - You're So Vain - Carly Simon
"I dreamed I saw the bombers riding shotgun in the sky and they were turning into butterflies above our nation" Woodstock - Joni Mitchell
"I remember when we took such care to step never on the cracks no only in the squares or else we'd be abducted by the bears..." It Was So Easy - Carly Simon
I can see why these appealed to me as a child. They're simple, visually descriptive and occasionally rhyme. I wish I could conjure up some of the imagery I imagined as a child, now. It must have been wild.
